Socrates had three golden words with regard to life and they were “beauty, proportion and truth.” I would add a forth - “design”, which I believe to be the culmination of the first three.
Plato too had his own theory “Plato's Theory of Forms”. It asserts that the physical world is not really the 'real' world; instead, ultimate reality exists beyond our physical world. His most famous quote was “The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself; to be conquered by yourself is of all things most shameful and vile.”
Socrates himself believed in ‘the universality of the inner rational being’ - “He is richest who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature.”
I have found much wisdom in the words of these two great thinkers and it brings me much comfort to draw upon their wisdom in my day to day endeavors, but it has also been a key to understanding my universe of design.
More current philosophers like Einstein and Darwin have taken up the torch of wisdom and have been successful in passing it on to further generations, if we only listen. Being an Architect and Designer I have found that I tend to look at life from the standpoint of this dimension.
